SOUTH ATLANTIC SHRINE ASSOCIATION

Minutes of the Business Meeting

September 15, 2016 – 12:00 pm

Doubletree Resort, Myrtle Beach, SC

 

Director General Buddy Ellis (Omar) called the meeting to order at 1:00 pm in the Doubletree Convention Center. The Omar Color Guard presented the colors and Noble Ellis led those in attendance in the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance. SASA Chaplain Ill. Sir John Stanley (Oasis) gave the invocation.

Noble Ellis welcomed everyone to the 2016 Fall Festival and introduced the Mike Lowder, Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Myrtle Beach who officially welcomed the Shriners to Myrtle Beach. Next Robin Herring, Chairman of the Board of the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce welcomed the group.

Director General Ellis introduced Ill. Sir Mike Mathews, President of the South Atlantic Shrine Association who delivered his welcome to the Nobles. Mathews then introduced Ill. Sir Eric Dean Joyner, Potentate of the Omar Shriners who welcomed everyone to his jurisdiction.

President Mathews then introduced the 2015-2016 SASA officers as follows: Noble Calvin Gaddy, Secretary/Treasurer (Oasis); Ill. Sir Dave Juergens, PP, 5th Vice President (Rizpah); Ill. Sir Douglas Stalnaker, PP, 4th Vice President (Nemesis); Ill. Sir Gregory Diffenderfer, PP, 3rd Vice President (Jericho); Ill. Sir Steve Norris, PP, 2nd Vice President (Sudan); and Ill. Sir Stephen Tucker, PP, 1st Vice President (Jamil). Next he recognized those Past Presidents of the association present.

He then introduced the Imperial Officers in attendance as follow: Imp. Sir Jerry Gantt, PIP, Chairman of the Board, Shriners Hospitals for Children (Arabia); Imp. Sir Richard Burke, PP, Imperial Captain of the Guard (Yaarab); Imp. Sir Kenneth “Kenny” Craven, PP, Imperial 2nd Ceremonial Master (Omar); Imp. Sir Jeffery “Jeff” Sowder, PP, Imperial High Priest & Prophet (Midian); Imp. Sir Jim Cain, PP, Imperial Assistant Rabban (Al Menah); and Imp. Sir Chris Smith, PP, Imperial Potentate (Wahabia).

Next he introduced Trana Pittman, Director of Public Relations, Geenville Shriners Hospital for Children who brought greeting to the assembly. Mathews then introduced Bethanne Demas Senior Regional Director of Public Relations, East Region, Shriners Hospitals for Children who also brought greeting from the hospitals in her charge.

President Mathews then excused the visitors present and began the business meeting by calling on Secretary/Treasurer Calvin Gaddy for the roll call. Following the roll call Mathews called on Gaddy to read the minutes. A motion was made and duly seconded to dispense with the reading of the minutes which was approved.

Ill. Sir Bill Harward (Oasis) Chairman of the Finance & Audit Committee reported the he had received the financial report from the Spring Meeting in Nashville and that he found all in order. A motion was made to approve his report, duly seconded and carried.

Ill. Sir Steve Tucker, chairman of the Time & Place Committee, gave his report as to locations of future meetings as follows:

2017 Spring March 31-April 1 Columbia, SC
Fall Sept. 14-17 Myrtle Beach, SC

2018 Spring March 21-24 New Bern, NC
Fall Sept. 19-22 Myrtle Beach, SC

2019 Spring March 28-30 Kingsport, TN
Fall Sept. 18-21 Myrtle Beach, SC

2020 Spring March 27-29 Parkersburg, WVA
Fall Sept. 17-20 Myrtle Beach, SC

A motion was made, duly seconded and carried to approve the Time & Place report.

The Nominations Committee report was given by Ill. Sir Ray Fields as follows: President – Ill. Sir Stephen Tucker, 1st Vice President – Ill. Sir Steve Norris; 2nd Vice President – Ill. Sir Gregory Diffenderfer; 3rd Vice President – Ill. Sir Douglas Stalnaker; and 4th Vice President – Ill. Sir Dave Juergens. A motion was duly made and seconded that the nominations be closed and that these officers be elected by acclimation, motion carried.

Ill. Sir Fields reported that the nominating committee had nominated Assistant Rabban Ralph A. Calhoun II from Omar for 5th Vice President. A motion was made and duly seconded that the nominations be closed and that Assistant Rabban Calhoun be elected by acclimation, motion carried.

Ill. Sir Fields next reported that Noble Calvin Gaddy who has served as Secretary/Treasurer since 1999 had chosen not to run this year. He stated that the nominating committee had chosen Ill. Sir Donald Ratliff, PP of Kazim Shriners as a candidate for Secretary/Treasurer. A motion was made and duly seconded to close the nominations and that Ill. Sir Ratliff be elected by acclimation, motion carried.

1st Vice President Steve Tucker made a motion that retiring Secretary/Treasurer Calvin Gaddy be named Secretary/Treasurer Emeritus to receive all the rights and privileges thereof. The motion was seconded an carried.

President Mathews called on 1st Vice President Steve Tucker to give his report on the spring and fall budgets. Budgets were presented and a motion was made and duly seconded that they be accepted, motion carried. Budgets attached.

Secretary/Treasurer Gaddy presented the operating budget for 2016-2017. A motion was made and duly seconded that the budget be accepted, motion carried. Copy attached.

President Mathews introduce those candidates for Imperial Outer Guard present for remarks. Ill. Sir Gale Lee gave his presentation first followed by Ill. Sir Larry Leib.

The Imperial Officers present spoke briefly regarding the fraternity and Shriners Hospitals for Children.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 3:50 pm.
